i want freedom! but keep me in line

This week we talked about freedom and form. This was one of those things I never really thought about as someone wanting to be a teacher. I always just thought what the teacher says, goes. No matter what. The whole freedom and form thing makes perfect sense to me. Obviously you want students to be under control and still follow by your rules, but freedom for the students is also important. That way, students can be creative, and accel in what they want. When I was in school, my classes were split. Some classes had freedom and form, while others were just form. You were given an assignment and you had to do it exactly the same as everyone else. There was no way to have freedom. Looking back I did better, not only grade wise, but full on learning too, in the classes where I was able to create some more on my own. Taking that, when I work on becoming and begin teaching, I will make sure I allow the student to create for their own, while having some structure. This will hopefully maximize the learning.

  1. Yes, Erik, my sense is that you need someone to keep you in line. My sense of you is that you prefer freedom to form, and that preference can get you into trouble from time to time. :-)
